Birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus, is a herbaceous species with striking yellow butterfly flowers that are close together with their heads. As a species of the butterfly-flower family, birdsfoot trefoil also has root tubers in which, in symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, nitrogen from the air is bound. In this way, birdsfoot trefoil contributes to the improvement of the soil, which makes it a good green manure.
